Sandburg Volleyball 20th in Latest NJCAA Division II Rankings

For the third week in a row, the Carl Sandburg College volleyball team is nationally ranked.
After playing perhaps the most difficult portion of their regular season schedule, the Chargers (30-11 overall, 8-1 Arrowhead Conference) moved down three spots to No. 20 in this week’s NJCAA Division II rankings, released Monday afternoon.
Sandburg was ranked 17th last week and 18th the week before that. The Chargers were No. 20 to begin the season.
Sandburg is coming off a 2-3 week, but all three of the Chargers’ losses came against quality competition over the weekend at the Parkland North vs. South Challenge. Sandburg was beaten Friday by unanimous No. 1 Parkland, voted the top team in the country each of the last seven weeks. The Chargers also lost in five sets Friday to Division I Lake Land and dropped a five-setter Saturday to Lincoln Land, which received votes in this week’s Division II rankings.
Sandburg picked up a sweep Tuesday against Illinois Valley on Sophomore Night and added a sweep of Division I Wabash Valley on Saturday. The win Saturday saw Chargers sophomores Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) and Cora Vyhnanek (Colchester, Ill./West Prairie) reach career milestones. Bowman recorded the 1,000th kill of her Sandburg career, and Vyhnanek picked up her 2,500th assist as a Charger.
Sandburg closes the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hawk with a chance to claim its second straight Arrowhead Conference title. The Chargers are tied for first with Sauk Valley at 8-1. A win would give the Chargers their eighth conference title and first repeat championship since winning four in a row from 1984-87.
